Anaesthetists are qualified doctors who provide anaesthetics (drugs which cause loss of sensation) to patients before, during and after surgery. This helps to ensure that the patient does not experience any pain.
Bile is a greenish-yellow fluid that is essential for digesting fats and for eliminating worn-out red blood cells and certain toxins from your body. Bile is produced in your liver and stored in your gallbladder.
The blood circulating through the body of a person.
Chemotherapy (also called chemo) is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. It can treat cancer cells anywhere in the body because it circulates in the blood. There are many types of chemotherapy drugs that can be given individually or in combination.
Total or partial suppression of the flow of bile.
Catheters are small plastic tubes that can be inserted in the body to treat diseases or perform a surgical procedure.
CHEMOSAT® is a type of chemosaturation therapy for treating cancers in the liver. CHEMOSAT® temporarily isolates the liver from the body’s blood circulation and delivers concentrated doses of an anti-cancer drug melphalan directly to the liver, “saturating” the entire organ.
A doctor who specialises in treating diseases of the digestive system, including the liver.
Having to do with the liver.
Supplies blood to the liver.
INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY (IR):
A qualified physician with the knowledge, skills, and experience required to perform minimally invasive, targeted treatments.
The liver is the 2nd largest organ in the body. It is about 8 inches long and weighs about 3 pounds. Your liver helps clean your blood and helps you digest food. It is a vital organ for your overall health.
Lymphatic vessels are structures of the lymphatic system that transport fluid away from tissues. Lymphatic vessels are similar to blood vessels, but they don't carry blood. The fluid transported by lymphatic vessels is called lymph. Lymph is a clear fluid that comes from blood plasma.
MEDICAL OR SURGICAL ONCOLOGIST:
A doctor who treats cancer with medicines such as chemotherapy. The medical or surgical oncologist orchestrates all activities of the procedural team for CHEMOSAT®, such as determination of Procedural Team members, logistics of the procedure, and pre– and post-operative procedures.
METASTATIC LIVER CANCER:
Cancer that starts somewhere else in the body and spreads to the liver (for example: melanoma, colorectal and breast).
Perfusionists interact with surgeons and other healthcare personnel to select and operate the appropriate equipment needed for surgical procedures such as chemosaturation therapy. During the chemosaturation therapy procedure the perfusionist carefully monitors circulatory and metabolic parameters such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and blood gases.
PRIMARY LIVER CANCER:
Cancer that starts in the liver (for example: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCC)).
Radiation therapy or radiotherapy, is a therapy generally used as part of cancer treatment to control or kill malignant cells. Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation to shrink tumours and kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy may be curative in a number of types of cancer if they are localised to one area of the body.
A doctor who treats cancer with radiation therapy.
Regional means concentrated to one organ e.g. the liver, no effect on other organs.
A doctor who treats diseases with surgery.
Systemic means affecting the whole body, or at least multiple organ systems. It is in contrast with topical or local. Systemic administration, a route of administration of medication so that the entire body is affected.
This is a minimally invasive surgical method to treat solid cancers. Special probes are used to “burn” or “freeze” cancer cells.
Tumour embolisation is a procedure to shut down the blood supply to cancer cells in order to promote their reduction or complete cell death.

Analytical/Statistic Cookies: these cookies are used to collect data (e.g. IP addresses, popular pages, length of time on pages, site performance) in order to create and analyse information and statistics on use and performance of a website. This information is then used to help improve the way the website works. These types of cookies may be set by the website operator but are often set by ‘third parties’ on the website user’s behalf.
Advertising/Targeted: cookies may also be used to gather information on a website user for the purpose of personalising advertising for that user. As with analytical cookies, these cookies are often provided by third parties.
Our website www.againsttheodds.com & www.lebengewinnen.de uses both persistent and session type cookies for analytical/statistical purposes. The table below sets out each of these cookies and provides details on their type, when they will expire and the purpose of the cookie.
